Spondylosis is a general term for age-related wear and tear of thespinal discs. It happens when discs and joints degenerate, when bone spurs growon the vertebrae, or both. These changes can impair the spine's movement andaffect the nerves and other functions.

Spondylosis is common and worsens with age. Types of spondylosisdevelop in different parts of the spine. They are:-

        •        Servicalspondylosis affects below the neck

        •        Thoracicspondylosis affects the middle of the spine.

        •        Lumbar spondylosisaffects the lower back.

        •        Multilevelspondylosis affects more than one part of the spine. (Ankylosing spondylosis)

The spine helps give the body structure and supports most of itsweight. It also carries and protects almost all of the main nerve branches thatrun from the brain. As a person ages, the discs become drier, thinner, andharder, and they lose some of their cushioning ability. Nowadays, usingcomputers and smart phones for a long time is one of the most common causes ofcervical spondylosis in young people.

These changes affect people differently, depending on eachindividual’s risk factors. Risk factors include:-

        •         Genetictendency

        •         Beingoverweight

        •         Sedentarylifestyle with a lack of exercise

        •         Injury to  the spine

        •         Smoking

        •         Having a jobthat requires repetitive or weight-bearing movements that involve the spine

        •         Anxiety ordepression

Common symptoms are:-

        •         Stiffness andmild pain in joints that gets worse with certain movements, long periodswithout moving or while sitting for a long time.

        •         Grindingfeeling when moving the spine

        •         Neck and backpains

        •         Fatigue

        •         Weakness inthe hands or legs

        •         Poorcoordination

        •         Muscle spasmsand pain

        •         Loss ofbalance and difficulty walking

        •         Loss ofbladder or bowel control
